This video is part 3 of a 4 part series of videos on the Data Manipulation Language (DML) UPDATE STATEMENT. This video takes the UPDATE STATEMENT to the next level. Just when you thought you could not learn anything else about the UPDATE STATEMENT, Scott Whigham pulls it off again. The topics and information learned from this video include:
  • Assigning a value for the update statement based upon data in a table or a subquery.
  • Basic use of AdventureWorks database
  • Real world examples utilizing transactions with the AdventureWorks database.
  • Proper utilization and syntax with the UPDATE STATEMENT and SET COMMAND.
  • Introduction to Simple Subqueries and proper syntax for that type of subquery.
  • Explanation of the processing sequence and logic behind subqueries.SET COMMAND and subquery triple one rule (scalar value return).
  • Common real world errors when utilizing subqueries and SET COMMANDS
  • Real world examples on proper utilization of setup, writing T-SQL and execution of the UPDATE STATEMENT, SET COMMAND, and the WHERE clause.Introduction to Simple and Correlated Subqueries
  • Examples on Correlated Subqueries
  • Introduction to ANSI/ISO FROM Proprietary Extension
Although Scott does a brilliant job of showing us how to properly write the syntax for a subquery when working with the UPDATE STATEMENT, this video does require a working knowledge of subqueries and the AdventureWorks Database prior to watching.
